it was founded by the Greeks in 600 B.C. and its age of splendour lasted about 1 century until it was occupied first by Lucanians and then it became a roman colony in 273 B.C.

Remains of its golden age are the three temples some of the best preserved in Italy and especially the temple of Poseidon even better preserved than the Parthenon in Greece. In the site there's also a museum housing the most important artefacts coming from the whole area and especially the frescoed "tomb of the Diver" 480 B.C, considered to be the only example of greek mural painting existing.
